Privacy Policy

We are using a subdomain of the University of Vienna. The data protection regulation (orig. Germ.: “Datenschutzerklärung“) is therefore published by its computer center. You can find it here (only German version available at the moment)! Some additional information can be found underneath.

Share Buttons

On our website we offer you the possibility to use so called “Social Media Buttons”. To protect your data, we use a solution called “Shariff”. Hereby the share buttons are implemented as static images, which contain a link to the corresponding social network site. If you click on such a button, you will be redirected to the respective social network site in the same way, as normal links would do as well. Only in that moment of time the provider of the social network site will get information about you, for example your IP address. If you do not click on such a share button, no data will be transmitted. Information about the collection and usage of your data on the social network sites can be found in the corresponding terms of use of the respective provider.

The “original” share buttons on the other hand automatically transmit data to the social network sites as soon as you visit any website. You do not need to click on a share button for this and therefore have no choice, if you want your data to be send. The German computer magazine c’t has developed “Shariff” (ʃɛɹɪf) that follows the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR – Regulation (EU) 2016/679). It is an open-source, low-maintenance, high-privacy solution to enable our visitors to share the content of our website without needless data leaks. You now decide for yourself which data you make available to Facebook, Twitter & Co. by clicking on the share button only if you really want to recommend a post. In fact, by clicking on the respective button you agree that your browser connects to the servers of this social network and transmits data. For more information about the Shariff project check out the original GitHub project and read about the project itself c’t information page (in German).

Website and Statistics

Every time you visit our website it will automatically store the following information for statistical reasons: ID, Date, Referred by, Target site

In direct comparison with statistics services like Google Analytics, WordPress.com Stats and Piwik, we do not process and store any personal data such as IP addresses – we use “Statify”! Statify counts views, not visitors. Complete data protection compliance paired with transparent procedures. The storage takes place in a database provided by the Vienna University Computer Center for a maximum of 30 days. This data is only used to optimize the website by showing our top targets as well as our top referers.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website. An example for this would be the feedback page where we embedded a Google Form asking for your feedback or the Google Map on the Venue page.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

How we protect your data

We try our best to keep your data safe with us by choosing only strong passwords and the encrypted https:// protocol for all website traffic. We have to remind you that the internet of this century still isn’t a safe zone at all. Latest research publications have shown – even industry standard encrypted email communication like S/MIME or OpenPGP is not secure at all (see so called “Efail“). However, please note that due to many vulnerabilities in the structure of the internet itself it is possible that the rules of data protection and the above mentioned safeguards are not observed by other persons or institutions not within our area of responsibility.

What data breach procedures we have in place

As mentioned before the Vienna University Computer Center is not only hosting the database but also the server infrastructure itself. Physical safety shall be guaranteed by them. Whenever we get to know a data breach ourselfs we have to inform you and the following Data Protection Authority of the University of Vienna within 72 hours. This data protection commissioner decides on the further procedure.
